At DistancePreps.com our motto is "The Future Runs Now" and to help celebrate the 2013 XC season, we have decided to start highlighting our future stars in a segment called "Frosh of the Week".

Devin Molloy, Barron Collier HS (North Port Invitational, 18:37)

Devin Molloy is Girls "Frosh of the Week".

Wow.  Devin has burst onto the Florida XC scene in a big way especially after her 4th place finish at the North Port Invitational over the weekend, right behind some of the best upper classmen harriers in the State.  Devin's 18:37 showed some real stamina from her early soccer foundation and a strong will to succeed.  As it is right now, Devin is the State's fastest freshman girl and has posted the 8th fastest time in the State regardless of school year.

Coach Ernie Jacot, Barron Collier HS

When Devin Molloy placed 2nd overall and 1st in her age group at the Moe’s Firecracker 5k with the time of 19:57, Barron Collier High School knew they were getting a good runner. When her coaches saw her run during her first week of practice, they knew they were getting someone great.  Devin, who ran her first ever 5k this past January in a little over 24 minutes, is quickly becoming one of Florida’s top runners.  An avid soccer player since 6th grade, Devin started gaining interest in running through her father who is a very competitive runner in Naples.  Devin says she always looked up to her dad and his running and knew when she ran well, she made him proud.  Her parents, Nancy and Jay, continue to be proud week after week as they come to every one of her races and are her biggest fans.

Regardless of the fact that Devin consistently has placed 3rdor 4th overall at meets with upwards of 50 schools, she is first and foremost a team player.  This past weekend at the North Port Invitational, Devin placed 4th overall in a time of 18:37.  A reporter asked if he could interview her after the awards ceremony.  True to form, Devin’s first response was that she did not want to make the team wait for her.  Devin is always encouraging and congratulating her teammates both in practices and meets.  After she finishes every race, you can find her on the sidelines cheering for each and every teammate as they cross the finish line.

Devin is the type of runner every coach dreams of having on their team.  She comes to practice every day ready to go and gives each and every workout, 100 percent.  She takes advice and immediately puts it to use.  Devin is an absolutely wonderful runner, student and person and Barron Collier is extremely lucky to have her.

Tristan Hamer, Niceville HS (Alligator Lake Invitational, 17:01)

Tristan Hamer is Boys "Frosh of the Week".
Tristan's progression is really extraordinary and shows what hard work and determination can do out on the course.  This past weekend at the Alligator Lake Invitational, Tristan was 48th overall as the pivotal 5th man on his squad that finished 4th with a team average of 16:25.

Coach Sherman Eller, Niceville HS

Tristan has been a nice surprise, not that we didn’t know he had the talent, but his drive and determination have exceeded our expectations and has been a nice gift. Tristan was very dedicated this past summer and showed promise of someone who could come in and contribute to the team right away. We saw this after his first race of the season when he ran 18:01 for 5k in his first Cross Country Race he had ever run. Then we knew he was even stronger when he broke 18 min (17:56) the next weekend at the Mobile Challenge of Champions meet on a very hot and humid afternoon. Tristan has set goals and seems focused to reach or exceed those goals. This past weekend he wanted to break 17 min, we knew he had a chance based on the past couple weeks of training. He came oh so close at 17:01, but that just kept him hungry and looking forward to Flrunners.

Having Thomas Howell and Nick Morken on the team to look up to has provided a nice background for his career and what he wants to accomplish. We feel he can compete with the top echelon in the State in the next year or two and his confidence and attitude will allow him to succeed in this endeavor. Tristan continues to show maturity in his training and the way he approaches his races. He is a great teammate and takes pride in representing Niceville High School, his teammates, and the Community. Tristan is also involved in Leadership and FCA.

Tristan has been a great addition to the Senior loaded boys team and will be a leader of this team in the future. Fun Fact: Our County has Cross Country in our Middle Schools, however Tristan did not run Cross Country in Middle School (he played Football), and only ran Track for one season, so the sky is the limit once he learns more about Cross Country racing!!

There are many factors that come into play when determining the "Frosh of the Week", including; time, place, rank against other freshmen, and overall impact they have on their team. We will not highlight the same Frosh more than once and the honors are purely subjective. If you wish to nominate your athlete for "Frosh of the Week" e-mail us at [email protected] with their name and why they are deserving of the honor.

See week 3! Also, we don't base selections on times alone.
