Can you say Sayonara?

I recently picked up a pair of the Mizuno Wave Sayonara’s from my favorite specialty running store, the Jacksonville Running Company.  I have always been a fan of the Mizuno Wave Precisions and MIzuno in general, but strayed away from the brand after falling in love with the fit of the Brooks Pure Cadence 2′s.

Fit – A+

My introduction to the Sayonara’s almost didn’t happen as the running store stated that they were out of size 11′s. I measure a 10.5 but tend to go up 1/2 size to make up for width. Before leaving the store I asked to try on the 10.5′s just so I could see how they felt. Upon lacing them up I was surprised to see that they not only fit length wise, but they also fit my width. Unlike the Precision, the Sayonara’s do not have stitching on the upper that constricts my feet allowing me to run in a shoe that is true to my size.

Ride - A-

My first run in the Sayonara’s was after completing one of Hammor’s House of Fitness’s WOD. I was, needless to say, sore and completely miserable. It also didn’t help that I have been nursing a sore ankle, that I twisted trying to help someone install a sign. Unfortunately I felt my ankle the entire run, which is to be expected when running in a neutral performance trainer.

The shoe itself did very well out of the box. There was no break in period required to feel comfortable running in the shoe. In every run I have done with the shoe I have been able to easily maintain a mid-foot strike and keep decent form. My legs don’t seem to tire as quickly as they do in some of my other trainers.

Appearance – A+

To quote my 78 year old grandmother “These shoes are sexy!” I must agree as they are loud enough to get a few glances, but can also be paired with some jeans and a running t-shirt without looking ridiculous.

Durability – Remains to be Seen

This is probably the only metric that I see the shoe potentially lacking. I have not had them long enough but imagine that they are not for those who try to get a year out of a pair of shoes. If I can get 2-3 months our of these I will be completely ecstatic.
