5 Things I learned this Weekend - Florida Five

Week 5 has come and gone in the Florida High School cross country season. Below is what we have observed with 3 race weekends left until the post-season.

1- All season long we have considered Brandon Marquez the clear favorite for the 4A title, with a bunch of chasers. On Saturday, at the Florida Runners 14 Invitational, Miami Sunset junior Nick Diaz said “Not so fast!” Nick won a very competitive invitational that included a bunch of top runners from the State of Florida. To date, this season, Diaz remains undefeated and will be looking to continue that streak into November!

2- The Bartram Trail girl’s team may have a sleeper in senior Hannah Giangaspro. Hannah managed to beat a very Providence's very talented Eden Meyer by 16 seconds at the 2013 Ponte Vedra XC Invitational. Hannah’s time of 18:53 ranks her amongst the top 25 overall in Florida.

3- The Trinity Prep boy’s squad is looking like they are the team to beat in 2A. A few weeks ago the FACA rankings had Titusville as the top team in 2A, but this weekend Trinity Prep proved these rankings wrong by putting 5 runners before Titusville’s number 3!

4- Fort Myers Green Wave senior Emily Edwards is on the comeback trail as she ran an 18:04 this weekend, beating her Estero rivals Araceli Leon and Bethany Jenkins by 21 and 35 seconds respectively. Edwards was the preseason favorite, but has struggled up until now. With Dr. Bob thinking the margin of victory between Nease’s Karen Xiang and the rest of the field seemed narrower than expected, it’s was Edwards guts and determination that prevailed.  If Edwards can keep improving she might be able to take the top spot from Karen Xiang of Nease who still remains the favorite for November 9th.

5- Are you tired of paying a monthly fee to see where runners stack up in the state of Florida? If so, check out our “Cream Rises to the Top” series that is powered by Dyestat’s powerful TFX database. DistancePreps.com is proud to be associated with Dyestat and Runnerspace as this week’s “Cream Rises to the Top” edition features the top 100 boys and top 68 girls from the Sunshine State!
