Rick Rothman, who built Spanish River into one of the most successful cross country programs in the state, has decided to step down as the Sharks' long-time coach.

"I just felt like it was time to go. I want to do some other things," Rothman, 60, said Thursday of his decision to leave the program he started in 1983. "I'm not disappearing, I'm just not going to coach high school any more."

Rothman retired from teaching at the Boca Raton school in 2011, but continued to lead the cross country program at Spanish River, where he spent that last 31 years of his 38-year coaching career.
